Saturday, the Scarlet Knights offered 6-6, 220-pound Pope John XXIII (Sparta, N.J.) tight end, Ryan Izzo, during this weekend's unofficial visitor extravaganza. After a slow recruiting start, Izzo is becoming one of the hot names from
the state of New Jersey.
"I've just been talking with Coach Cohen a lot over Facebook, and my coach has been telling them a lot about me,"
said Izzo. "So I got invited down to visit today, and Coach Flood just brought me in his office and told me
they are going to offer me!"
The pass-catching tight end further broke down his conversation with Rutgers head coach, Kyle Flood.
"He was just talking about Coach Prince, the new offensive coordinator, and how they need tight ends like me.
And that he thought I could help them win a national championship." Izzo has long been a fan of Rutgers football,
but the school's move to the Big Ten conference has opened his eyes to the program even further.
"I've always been interested in Rutgers," he said, "it being the state school of New Jersey, but it's a great school
with great tradition. And with them moving to the Big Ten, It's definably a huge move for them and the whole program." Although the Scarlet Knights were proactive in their recruiting approach towards Izzo, Virginia Tech beat them to
the punch in being first to offer.
"Virginia Tech was my first offer, and I am going to Temple Monday and Boston College Wednesday. Schools that have shown me interest other than those schools are Michigan State, UNC, Maryland and NIU."
Rutgers also has an offer out to Izzo's junior teammate, Noah Brown, and has displayed a high interest level
in class of 2016 pro-style quarterback, Sonny Abramson.
